I took it to my normal repair guy and he has gone through all of the normal things but today called and said that he gave up. He also tried a new coil without luck.

I am suspicious of the fuel solenoid. The unit gets so hot you cant touch it after a few minutes of operation.

I suspect it is getting so hot it is producing a vapor lock in the carb. Should the solenoid get that hot? View Public Profile. Find all posts by Buddypup. Most large Kohler engines on riding lawn mowers use an electric starting system. Part of that system is a starter solenoid. The cylindrical solenoid is a low-amperage relay that safely completes the high-amperage electrical connection between the battery and starter motor when the ignition key is turned.

A bad solenoid can deny electricity to the starter motor and prevent engine startup. But other basic problems may also exist. Check the charge level of the mower battery by touching the red lead of your voltmeter to the positive post of the battery and the black lead to the negative post.

If the meter reads less than Check all electrical connections between the battery, solenoid and starter motor to see if they are tight and free of corrosion. The starter motor is a vertical metal cylinder about 6 inches long mounted on the side of the engine. Attached to the solenoid are two thick red wires, one from the battery and the other to the starter motor. You also may see a separate small grounding wire. Clean any visibly corroded connections in the starter system.

First, disconnect the battery. Undo the corroded connection with the appropriate wrench or screwdriver. Remove corrosion from the connecting pieces by sanding them with medium-grit sandpaper until they are bright, then reconnect them. Tighten any loose connections. Check that the gearshift is in neutral, the mower deck is disengaged and the parking brake is set. Reconnect the battery and try to start the engine again. Test the solenoid if the engine still fails to turn over.

Look for the large terminal posts on the solenoid where the thick red wires connect to the solenoid. Touch the metal shaft of a screwdriver to both of the large terminals at the same time. If the engine turns over and starts, the solenoid is bad and should be replaced. If the starter motor does not run, the motor itself is probably defective.

On some solenoids, the large terminals are on opposite sides of the solenoid. In such a case, use a jumper cable to connect the two large terminals.Shopping cart. Thread starter cjones Start date Mar 9, Joined Sep 11, Threads 4 Messages I Gave the carb a good cleaning yesterday and installed the kit.

The mower is sitting awhile before it starts leaking gas out the bottom of the carb. I Notice that the float sits a lot lower now after installing this new kit. Did i purchase the wrong one? Okay, i think it may of been the bowl ring because it wasn't fitting snug so i put the old one back on.

I poured gas through where the fuel line connects to the side of the carb using dropper until it started running out of that hole i was pouring the gas through until a little bit to make sure it was full and i sit it in a jar so it would stay sitting up and jet i have an no call leaking out yet. Didn't leak for several hours so i stuck the crab back on. Few mins later fuel started dripping down from bottom of the bowl. It looks like its coming around the fuel solenoid gasket.

This is the new gasket that came with the kit. When i had the carb on the bench and put gas in the carb through the inlet where the fuel line connects, would the bowl still fill with gas or does the bowl only fill with gas when the fuel solenoid is open?

If the bowl can still fill with gas when the solenoid is closed, it should have still leaked if the gasket wasn't sealing right? Could it possibly be the fuel solenoid itself leaking? Because the casing on the fuel solenoid is lose not the fuel solenoid itself and i can turn it with my hand back and forwards.

If i take the fuel solenoid off and wipe it down than screw it back on, i can leave it several hours and it will not leak at all.

But as soon as i turn the key on than back off, a min later it will start dripping gas, and it will drain the tank if i don't crimp the fuel line. Anyone have an idea what could be going on? Kohler CV14S problem!!!! Messages: 5. Hey all, new to the forum, looking for advise I am a trained Small engine Mech, though I never worked on the field, just spin wrenches for fun.

So I am out of practice a bit The problem is this Seems like a fuel delivery problem, as, you can keep it running for a short time longer when it starts, if you put it to full choke.

Then after about 5 more seconds, it just dies all together. The warmer it is, the more often it does it. Here is what it is NOT: It is NOT carb has been cleaned and rebuilt, I found a spot for a welch plug that was not installed, but you know how carb kits are for several models so I left it out as I found it Has a new fuel filter, the in tank filter is fine and cleaned.

The fuel pump is clean and in great shape, seems to work well. Or some sort of electrical condition that once warm, and resistance goes up is causing problems Messages: 2, That welch plug wasn't missing. They don't use one. Hook an aux fuel tank to the carb to isolate fuel supply from engine. See if that helps. I don't agree with you gkt expansion theory. And you don't know, at this point, if it's the carb or not.
